Well look at that! SBJ is finally coming around to the opportunity sports DTC streaming can provide teams/leagues. The bottom line, is that as viewing habits continue to shift towards digital platforms and devices, sports entities with built in fan bases and star athletes can exploit DTC streaming:👉 ADTCapproach allows for direct relationship with fans. Teams can personalize the communication, target marketing and tailor offerings to fans to increase engagement and revenue.👉 A DTC model will be able to better to measure advertisement spending with viewership numbers and post-advertisement behavior. It was a pleasure speaking with Eben Novy-Williams and Sportico about the state of play in sports media. Our conversation touched on several points that I made back in February during a Channel Change article on “Fan Lifetime Value (LTV)” - a metric that couldbecome as fundamental to the economics of sport as salary caps (link here:https://lnkd.in/extvABDz).If teams, leagues and federations are to sustain climbing valuations and insulate their business models from price corrections in the media rights landscape, they have to leverage their incredible brand strength, loyal followings and consumer data to explore vertical expansion. This would entail extending new products/services to fans (packaged goods, streaming services, credit cards, entertainment-themed real estate, fashion apparel, etc.) - business lines that break the status quo of pure content generation.Macroeconomic and industry data suggests this media rights price correction is overdue, a matter ofwhen notif. Great article by Eben Novy-Williams of Sportico in conversation with George Pyne. In a world of unlimited content, the scarcity and human emotion of premium live event experiences provides ever increasing differentiation and value – look at the explosion in social currency of the National Football League (NFL), English Premier League, IPL Cricket, The Sphere and, Exhibit A, Taylor Swift! But the industry landscape is becoming much more complex to navigate and harder to monetize. Automatic and significant increases in the value of media rights and sponsorships will be the preserve of all but the fewest truly unique sports and content franchises. Harnessing data, building brands and creating partnerships that can transcend different business models will become critical competencies.
