A really good introduction to Photoshop for me, as I have no graphics or art training whatsoever and need to design the content that I create. Great class, and our instructor was a pro with many years of experience and very patient!

Christine Kulaka

This is a thoughtfully organized, well paced and delivered, practical course—a sort of ‘finishing school’ for the graphic designer.

Dorcas Gelabert
American Thoracic Society

Already working in the graphic design industry, this class was a great refresher course and helped me to remember why I chose to pursue graphic design as a career.

Kristine Seubert
Sherman Specialty

I have been inefficiently fooling around with Photoshop, usually feeling intimidated by the program, for years. In just three days, I have learned to edit my photos with confidence. Noble Desktop rocks. Now I am ready to tackle Illustrator...

Michelle Ganon

I was worried coming into the class about being left behind in the instruction as design classes tend to be fast paced. The instructor, Michele, was extremely personable and patient; I especially liked the comfortable atmosphere of the classroom, and the overall flow of the class was very organized and professional. Clean presentation, great work materials.

Charles Mott
The Real Real

Illustrator was my third class at Noble, and they just get better and better. Michele is an excellent instructor; articulate, knowledgeable, and most important patient. Noble’s teaching method makes it easy to learn. I am sorry I waited so long to take the class. Thank you Noble and Michele!

Jill Korostoff
JakDesign, Inc

I knew InDesign was a program I would need help to understand. After this class, I don’t only understand it, I feel quite comfortable with it. I seriously cannot believe I learned so much in such little time!

Susana Piscitiello
The Bowery Mission

This class was very comprehensive for three days—I learned so much about Illustrator! The instructor was perfect: knowledgeable, attentive, and dynamic, delivering rather dry material with a sense of humor and fun. I’d recommend Noble Desktop courses to anyone.

Jennifer Clark

Noble Desktop has an incredible plethora of design courses that they teach in depth and will really change any designers life. It's also great to get a refresher and learn all of the new updates in any design or web related program. Thank you!

Treeva Royes
Kate Spade New York

Noble Desktop is by far one of the best, if not the best experience I have had in a classroom learning environment for Adobe Creative Suite. Their teaching method of observing then doing is the most effective way in learning a computer software program.

Jason Williams

Highly recommended!!! If you don't know anything about the Adobe apps or if you want to master your skills, this is the right place to do so.

Dominika

A lot of information in a little bit of time, with a great booklet to reference!

Chrysti Cook

Noble is a great place for learning new stuff. The instructors are very knowledgable, friendly and extremely helpful.

Kamilla Zakirbayeva

Real world assignments that strengthen your creativity.

Dianamarie Borrero

Great class, putting it into practice is the key - felt like I came away feeling clearer and more confident to use the program.

Jacinta Hayne

This class provided me with a lot of applicable knowledge. I am a graphic designer whose weakest program was InDesign. I was able to brush up on the basics while also learning a fair amount of more advanced techniques. I would love to take a Noble Desktop class in every category now!

Ari

The Adobe InDesign Bootcamp is a great way to pick up new skills in short time. If you're interested in learning Adobe and graphic design skills without the rigors of academic classics at a university or college, this is a great place to come.

Nicole Siciliano

The InDesign class at Noble Desktop is really worthwhile. It gives you hands-on projects which you can continue to work on after the class, using the basic skills you've learned. It gears you up for a lifelong of learning with InDesign by teaching you the fundamentals of the software.

Sneha Shah

Alfred made each class very enjoyable. His energy and attitude made it easy to look forward to class each week. I recommend this course to anyone that is looking to learn more about Graphic Design.

Jack Smith

I had Eugenio for Photoshop and InDesign, he is very patient and knowledgeable. I had a lot of tools to take back to work.

Traci-lea Dixon
GFI Realty

Eugenio is very thorough in explaining the step-by-step process on everything. Whether it’s creating your own brush or gradient, he explains a few times and is eager for feedback and if anyone needs help.

Ashley Lateef

Adobe Illustrator is overwhelming with a lot of information and tools to master, but the instructor made sure everyone can follow and understand the concept before he moves on to the next topic. This is a great introduction to Illustrator and is open to all levels, from someone who has never used the software before to even professional designers.

Abigail Butalid

Noble Desktop is a wonderful resource for aspiring graphic designers. I would recommend the immersive certificate course to anyone who is looking to brush up on their Adobe Creative Cloud skills and get a jumpstart on compiling a portfolio.

Anna Otis

Fabulous intensive technical class showing the ins and outs of InDesign. The instructor was super informative, was great at keeping everyone involved and interested and most importantly had a lot of patience. The workbook that we got to take home at the end was very helpful.

Sari Mizrahi

Angela George

The Graphic Design Bootcamp was a great class in which my Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign skills all came together and improved, while building my own portfolio.

Anthea van der Velden

I've taken many courses at this school (NYIM/Noble Desktop) and am signed up for more. The instructors expertly and patiently completely convey very comprehensive material on each subject. I would not go anywhere else to learn these programs and have recommended the school to many friends and associates.

Stacey Brody

This Photoshop Bootcamp class gave me enough free time to not only explore Photoshop but also learn the basics in an easy and concise way.

David Pangilinan

This was a great introductory course to animations in Photoshop! I am excited to take back what I learned and use at work.

Maddy
Cancer and Careers

Noble Desktop erased any fear I had about animated gifs. I had tried learning on my own and created what I wanted, but the process was beyond tedious and I avoided offering that service to clients. Noble Desktop showed me how much simpler and doable it could be and now I want to invest more time in learning this increasingly valued skill in my field.

Paul Vanderberg

This class is very informative. Even with the UX sphere rapidly growing every day, the instructor managed to stay on top of the many changes happening within Adobe XD and how it stacks up against similar apps.

Naeem Holman

This class allows you to take a real world idea and walk through the steps to bring it to life. It opened my eyes to a whole different world of design.

Anthony Romano
NYCDOHMH

This is a great way to learn about the field of UX Design, as well as prepping you to begin your potential new career! It's a lot of information to learn but in a good way.

Kristine Ross

The UX/UI Design Certification process did a beautiful job of introducing me to the field, giving me a working knowledge its components and getting me excited about working in it in the future. The new space is beautiful and Michelle was intelligent, passionate about the work and thoughtful in her student interactions.

Erica

Over the years I've taken a half dozen of so classes here at Noble. Every one of them has been chock full of information and taught by a professional, knowledgeable, personable instructor. It's always wonderful to learn here and the new facilities are beautiful.

Maida Landau

Given the fact that we had to do this entire class remotely due to Covid-19, I didn't have very high expectations it would run so smoothly. However, I don't think it could've gone any better. Not only do I feel very comfortable with the program now, I'm actually excited to use it!

I immensely enjoyed attending the graphic design courses by Dan Rodney, he is very skilled in this field and he has a great way of giving over the material at a nice pace and in an informative way. always answering questions and staying overtime if necessary so that we leave the class knowing all the material. I took this course over Zoom and I am very pleased with the format and overall outcome

Kaila Danzinger

Dan was a great instructor, very clear and engaging when reviewing the materials. I feel confident in with my new skills!

I have taken Noble Desktop classes in person as well as online and both types were excellent! Great teachers, and I love that ND allows one to retake a class within 6 months. I took the Graphic Design certificate class with Eugenio during fall of 2019, and ND allowed me to retake the 3 Adobe bootcamps online via Zoom with Dan Rodney in June 2020. Retaking it online allowed me to gain additional insight and acquire a much more solid foundation in Illustrator, PS, and InDesign. Thank you ND! Highly recommended.

Anna Stabler

Noble Desktop's design curriculum is designed for professionals without cutting any corners or simplifying with shortcuts. It honors my professional goals by teaching me the most complete steps.

Virginia Mangrum

10/10 would recommend this program above other virtual learning bootcamps out there! I felt like the classes were tailored to software and industry standards we would need to know, and not just there to collect my money and send me out into the design world unprepared (like with some of those other well-known schools). If I could go back to when I was deciding which school to choose, I would choose this one all over again.

Jessica Cleveland

It's a good class, I'm happy I signed up! Justine makes learning Photoshop fun and is a very good and effective teacher. She is helpful and responsive to questions and made this learning experience very positive.

Alan Ho

Eugenio's Photoshop class is fabulous. The 3-day bootcamp class was intense but very well paced. Eugenio did a masterful job of balancing the "hand-holding" (i.e. leading us step-by-step through many of the exercises) while also cutting us loose with in-class assignments to complete on our own. Throughout the 3-day class, he remained always good-humored and patient. I also appreciated the wealth of knowledge that Eugenio shared on related topics (i.e. software, resources, refresher materials, and career advice.)

Joana Miranda

Absolutely loved my experience in this class! I learned so much about Adobe and how to use their products to build a custom portfolio that I can send to future employers. Very excited to see where my newfound skills will take me and how I can continue to evolve those skills!

Daniela Wolfert

Eugenio is incredibly knowledgeable, patient, and talented. He shared lots of industry insight and made the class interesting beyond simply learning the skills in the programs. I would definitely recommend taking a class led by Eugenio.

Stanley Williams

This class is so much better than I thought it would be. I will consider more classes and absolutely recommend it to anyone who might be interested in advancing their skills. I originally thought of this as just learning an adjacent skill for my work, but I'm so excited about learning more that I'm considering to continue learning about Graphic Design and getting more into the programs than just kind of knowing my way around. Eugenio is very knowledgeable and such a great teacher. I'm getting so much more out of this class than I expected. So happy I went in person! It really seems they care and try hard to make it a wonderful in-person experience. Everything is clean, great equipment, nice space design. From the start, the communication has been incredibly quick and great, no matter whether I used chat on the site or email. I have only good things to say about this class and Noble Desktop. Thank you all so much for making this such a great experience!

The Graphic Design Portfolio Bootcamp allowed me to learn a TON in a short amount of time. Not a minute is wasted in this course. It allowed me to put all of my skills together and create a beautiful portfolio that I can use for future interviews/job searches.

Marissa Sozio

Eugenio is a great teacher who made it so easy to understand InDesign and all that is possible to create with it! This course gave me a great foundation in InDesign, which I will continue to build off the more I practice, but I am so grateful to have a better, comprehensive understanding of these tools now to get started.

Annie Collopy

I feel much more confident using Illustrator after taking this class and appreciate how Eugenio combined stories from his real-life work experience with his deep technical knowledge to create an engaging and informative class.

Stanley Williams

I wasn't sure if taking this course would help me, but it did in many ways that I didn't think it would. The school has its own unique way of teaching courses and bootcamps. I've learned a lot from the bootcamps, and I have to say I enjoy learning from them.

Learn More About Graphic Design

Interested in a career in graphic design? Looking to learn a new artistic skill? Want to expand the canvases upon which you can work? We have the workshops, classes, and certificate programs to help you get started or expand your skillset.

For those looking to get into graphic design, you’ll want to learn the applications designers use and design concepts such as typography, composition, color, etc. Beginners can learn these applications in our classes or certificate programs. Noble Desktop offers graphic design classes for beginners and experienced design students, so you won’t have to worry about finding a class that suits your needs.

Designers with prior experience (such as print design) looking to expand their skills should consider our courses in Visual Design and UX (User Experience) Design.

The core Adobe apps designers commonly use are:

Adobe Photoshop

Photoshop is an industry-standard photo editing app, but you can do much more with it than just manipulating photos. It’s very versatile and used by photographers, designers, videographers, and more to edit photos, create graphics, design websites, and build animated GIFs... just to name a few.

Photoshop is one of the standard apps every graphic designer knows. You can use it to create graphics for many types of uses, such as social media, web, emails, video, and print. The graphics can contain photos, text, logos, icons, etc. Photoshop can open and export various graphic file formats so that you can use it across many industries.

Photoshop is best known as a photo editor. You can do standard image improvements such as adjusting contrast, brightness, color, and sharpness or more advanced things such as moving elements from one background to another, removing unwanted elements, and adding new elements (like a better face in a group photo). What you can do in Photoshop is only limited by your imagination and Photoshop skills.

Web Design: Because many designers know Photoshop, they use it when designing websites and web graphics. Adobe has added many web design features in the past few years. While some web and UI designers are now using other apps such as Sketch and Adobe XD, Photoshop is still used by many web designers and will probably continue to be used for quite some time.

Animated GIFs: Animated GIFs are popular on social media, HTML Emails, and more. You can create them with Photoshop or After Effects. Photoshop is easier for creating simple animated GIFs. After Effects can create more complex animations (which you can make into animated GIFs), but it’s also a more complex app to learn/use, so it can be overkill for creating some animated GIFs.

Adobe InDesign

From long documents (such as books and magazines), to short documents (such as brochures and business cards), InDesign is great at creating layouts that combine text and graphics. InDesign is ideal for creating designs that will be printed but can also be used for digital output such as eBooks, PDFs, and more.

InDesign is the king of long documents. You can import content from authors (Word files, Excel documents, etc.), style it and layout pages. InDesign has many features to help along the way, such as paragraph styles, character styles, object styles, master pages, powerful find/change, tables, footnotes, table of contents, and more. InDesign can even export eBooks as ePub files, which can be converted into Mobi files for the Amazon Kindle.

InDesign can create small business cards, brochures, and more documents. InDesign’s amazing typography features are useful in any design involving type, whether a poster or flyer. From one page to hundreds, InDesign is up to the task.

InDesign has many features that help you create professional PDFs. You can create high-quality PDFs that will be printed or optimize them for fast download via email or website. You can create PDF forms or add interactive PDF features (which, unfortunately, do not work well on most mobile devices).

Adobe Illustrator

Illustrator is an industry-standard vector graphics and illustration app. Designers and illustrators use it to create logos, web graphics, fashion designs, product packaging, and more.

Even if you can’t draw things by hand, there are still a lot of things you can do with Adobe Illustrator. Before discussing some common ways people use Illustrator, let’s quickly cover the difference between vectors and pixels.

Drawing & Illustrations: One way to create a vector drawing/illustration is to draw it by hand and then trace it in Adobe Illustrator. You can also draw directly in Illustrator. Having artistic talent helps, but even if you can’t draw well in real life, you can still use Illustrator’s drawing tools to create things you might never have been able to create by hand.

Logos & Icons: It’s important to create logos as vectors so that they can be used at any size. Creating a logo in Photoshop as pixels would be a mistake because you’d limit the quality and size at which you can use the logo. Icons are used in websites, apps, print, and all types of design. These, too, are best drawn as vectors so they can be scaled without losing quality.

Web Graphics & social media: Vector graphics can be used in websites as SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics). Social media graphics often require converting your designs into pixel-based PNG or JPEG files, but working with vectors can still be easier during the design process.

Fashion Design: Fashion designers often use Illustrator to create patterns (controlling how art repeats within a pattern), explore color, and to show how patterns look in a dress, shirt, pants, etc.

Product packaging: Designers that create packaging appreciate Illustrator’s precision and many graphic features. Amazing typography, graphic effects, the ability to import photos, and many more features let packaging designers create beautiful packaging material that will be printed and used to sell and protect the products we purchase.

Design Theory & Portfolio Development

Once you’ve learned the graphic design tools, learn design theory and develop a portfolio to show clients and employers. In our Graphic Design Bootcamp, you will produce several portfolio projects, including logos, social media graphics, stationery, book/eBook covers, album covers, event posters, and email announcements. By the end of this class, we hope you’ll have at least five finished pieces for your portfolio. The instructor is available throughout the six classes to give feedback and advice on all projects during and outside of class.

Here are a few key concepts used in graphic design:

Typography

Type is an important part of all designs. There are many aspects designers can use to control the appearance of type. It's not only choosing the typeface/font, designers can choose the weight (bold, black, light, etc.), style (italic, condensed, etc.), uppercase vs. lowercase, line height (leading), and much more. Typography affects how easily something can be read, how quickly a viewer can scan over and get a sense of the content, and emotional feelings (serious, playful, happy, sad, etc.).

Color

Color is a powerful tool that designers use to draw the viewer’s attention to certain elements. It’s also used to affect a design's emotional connection and mood. Color is very important for branding since humans tend to associate certain colors with certain emotions. Learning those associations, as well as how certain colors pair with each other is an important part of building designs that quickly and effectively communicate information to the audience before they have had the chance to process the contents of a graphic design.

Composition

Composition is important for creating layouts that are visually attractive as well as easy to understand. Composition involves hierarchy (the order of importance), spacing, proximity, balance, alignment, contrast, repetition, and more. Composition helps viewers understand the intention of a graphic design piece intuitively, so skillful Graphic Designers can leverage this knowledge to guide their audience to the conclusion they want them to reach.

UI (User Interface) & UX (User Experience) Design

Visual or UI designers work with UX designers to design visuals for websites, apps, and more. They determine the colors, typography, and appearance based on insights gained from the UX design process. Visual designers typically use Figma, Sketch (Mac only), or Photoshop to create their designs.

There are two applications UX and UI Designers typically use: Sketch and Figma. Both tools are powerful collaboration and prototyping tools, but they serve slightly different functions, mostly because of the limitations and affordances of Sketch as a Mac-only application.

Figma

Recently acquired by Adobe, Figma is a browser-based collaborative user interface design application. It allows teams of users to work together on a single design file to create working prototypes of webpage and user interface layouts for testing and iteration. Since it is a browser-based application, users can work on designs from any internet browser, making Figma an ideal tool for large group projects that require constant collaboration. In addition, Figma provides users with their FigJam service, a team-organizing and brainstorming platform designed to help facilitate all aspects of the collaborative UI design process.

Sketch

Sketch is a Mac-only app that many UX designers use to create designs and prototypes to test on users and show clients and developers how something will work. Sketch is often paired with InVision (using its Craft plugin) to create the prototypes. The biggest advantage to Sketch is that it is optimized for iOS interface design and development, giving users powerful tools for building their prototype designs. Students who plan to work in iOS app development will want to learn Sketch.

Photoshop and Illustrator

While most UI Designers utilize tools like Figma and Sketch, which have been built with user interface design in mind, many still take advantage of the features of programs like Photoshop and Illustrator. Not only is Photoshop regularly utilized as a tool for building user interfaces (particularly in the early brainstorming phases), but these tools are important for designing and building the digital assets that will populate a completed web design project. While many large projects will have dedicated Graphic Designers working alongside UI Designers, being able to do both parts of the job is a great way to set yourself apart from other prospective employees.

UX Design Research Skills

Unlike most graphic design fields, UX design is less concerned with how a project looks than how it feels once users start interacting with it directly. This means that UX design processes rely heavily on user behavior testing and other methods of garnering feedback on prototype designs. UX Designers will need to know how to collect this information, so they’ll learn how to perform user behavior testing, run focus groups, write surveys, and gather feedback. They will also learn how to use this data, since it is a general principle that users are good at identifying problems but terrible at identifying solutions. UX Designers will need to be able to take user feedback and transform that feedback into actionable insights that development teams can implement.

A UX Designer is a “people person” that focuses on users' needs to enhance a product (website, app, etc). Rather than designing graphics, UX Designers conduct user research, create and test ideas with prototypes, and do user testing to see how things perform. They communicate these insights to visual designers and developers. It is important that UX Designers understand how to draw inferences from their research and how to communicate these inferences to the rest of their team.

User experience research takes many forums. UX Designers observe customers interacting with a product and conduct interviews to understand their needs. UX Designers also use stealth research methods like the A/B testing to test out different experiences to see how they perform in the real world, allowing them to see which performs best.

Graphic Design Careers

Learning graphic design is an ideal way of preparing for a new, in-demand career in a wide range of creative industries. Companies looking to build a brand identity need to hire Graphic Designers, UX Designers are a vital part of any web development project, and Design Directors are important for managing large-scale projects. No matter what field or industry you are interested in working in, there are graphic design careers you should consider exploring. A few common graphic design positions include:

  • Graphic Designer: The Graphic Designer job title covers virtually all creative professionals who work in 2D, static visual design fields. It includes everything from magazine layout artists to graphic illustrators working on product packaging. As a result, Graphic Designers' responsibilities and job skills will vary greatly depending on the industry in which they work. A magazine layout artist will spend the majority of their time working with Adobe InDesign and will likely need to know Photoshop, while they will never really have a reason to use Figma. A Graphic Designer hired to design company logos, or branded merchandise will need to be proficient in Illustrator but not InDesign. This means that unless you are very confident in the kind of graphic design work you want to do professionally, you’ll want to build a wide base of skills to maximize your career opportunities as a Graphic Designer.
  • UI Designer: UI Designers take their graphic design knowledge and apply those skills to digital design projects like webpages and mobile application interfaces. UI Designers use specialized tools like Figma or Sketch to create outlines and designs of digital applications that are passed onto developers for coding and programming. Since virtually every company and organization aims to strengthen their web presence, UI Designers are in high demand. Creatives looking to take advantage of the tools offered by the digital canvas of a web browser should seriously consider looking for work in the field of UI design.
  • UX Designer: Since digital interfaces are interactive applications, companies must also employ User Experience Designers to account for how a webpage or application feels once it is in a user’s hand. The most beautiful webpage in the world will fail to attract an audience if it is cumbersome and difficult to navigate. UX Designers are the professionals tasked with ensuring that a finished web design project has undergone rigorous user testing and is easy to use and accessible. UX Designers can find work in virtually any industry since user experience design is also important for things like consumer and industrial software design and projects like mobile application development (virtually every company and organization is working on perfecting their mobile applications). UX Designers tend to be the most specialized graphic design professionals since their work is more focused on iterating on the work of other design team members.
  • Design Director: Most professional design projects are undertaken by massive teams of designers working alongside one another to produce a host of different, interconnected designs. This means that they require the oversight of training professionals who can ensure that projects run smoothly and efficiently. Design Directors are the professionals who work to organize and oversee the collaborative aspects of the design process and work to manage the human element of the process. They are also responsible for ensuring that a project is completed on time and under budget, which is an essential part of a successful project (it doesn’t matter how excellent a design project is if it never comes to fruition). Design Directors often have project management training, but they will also need graphic design skills to manage the graphic design aspects of a project.

Other Reasons to learn Graphic Design

Express Yourself Creatively

Even if you aren’t interested in a career in graphic design, learning these skills can be a great way to expand your creative toolkit. If you are already interested in art, learning graphic design tools can enhance your abilities and give you a greater range of options for creating vibrant and evocative art pieces. This can be as elaborate as learning Illustrator to create multi-layered, elaborate digital art pieces (that you can sell online) or as simple as learning Photoshop to make your vacation photos more compelling. If you want to be creative and take your hobbies to the next level, learning graphic design tools is a great way to take the next step.

Improve Your Creative Workflow

For existing professional creatives (or advanced hobbyists), learning graphic design tools can help you take advantage of the potential offered by digitally-assisted art applications. Artistic projects that were impossible a decade ago have become mundane thanks to the rapid development and accessibility of technology, which has made working in artistic mediums easier than ever. Even something as simple as learning the basics of Illustrator or Photoshop can greatly improve the quality of your work and can make the drafting and revision process much smoother.

Work on a Digital Canvas

One of the most exciting things about learning graphic design is that the digital applications used in the process allow users to create impressive digital art pieces. The interactive nature of digital interfaces gives artists an additional angle to approach their work, and skilled designers can leverage this new technology to produce more compelling, more powerful art installations in a digital environment. Whether you are looking to create rhetorically persuasive digital documentaries, elaborate portfolio pages, or art pieces that take advantage of the interactivity and fluidity of a web browser, learning how to use tools like Figma and Photoshop can help you express yourself in the digital realm.

Find Work You Love

One reason to pursue a career in graphic design is that so many different industries and fields leverage visual communication as a rhetorical tool so that you won’t be boxed into a specific sector of the economy. While graphic design is most commonly associated with commercial product development and advertising, non-profit organizations and advocacy groups leverage the graphic design talents of their employees to produce visually appealing and rhetorically persuasive content to help advance their causes. Political campaigns are famous for employing talented Graphic Designers (who create memorable logos, signage, and other memorabilia), and entertainment companies regularly employ Graphic Designers who design paratextual materials like title cards, posters, or book covers. In fact, the live entertainment industry is expected to be one of the largest employers of Graphic Designers over the next decade.
