Today, January 24th, is the International Day of Education. The physical state of our learning institutions are a reflection of the value we place on our educational system. We were in Kwali the other day, and I spotted this absolutely deplorable classroom. The thing is, this is just one of many classrooms across the FCT & Nigeria that are in less than prime condition. If we will have more peaceful communities, and get the best out of education, we must pay attention to the state of the environment in which the process of education is occurring. A conducive learning environment does wonders for assimilation, and can create positive ties to learning.#InternationalDayofEducation#internationaleducation #IntlDayofEducation#LearningforLastingPeace

💭 Before the 1st of June, I'd never heard about the banking concept of education. Now, I remember exactly how I felt through primary and secondary schools as a Nigerian child where my humble opinions never mattered, save the teachers'.Last week, as I helped a child with their homework, one of the questions asked was - 'What is swimming'? I immediately said it was a sport, but the child vehemently refused, stating the teacher had told them in school that it was "just a game in which people play with their hands and feet in the water." This is not such a bad thing, given that the child remembered what the teacher had taught. However, it is not a great thing either because the child was not willing to listen to any other opinion on what swimming is. Now, this is a bad thing. In Nigeria, our curriculum is stifled and the banking concept of Education is reflected in the way we are taught and how we learn. As Paul Freier describes it, learners are assumed to know nothing and teachers know it all: the teacher thinks of/on behalf of the learners, and learners aren't allowed to think; teachers are the subjects of the learning process, and learners are mere objects in the process. This is the exact relationship we have with our deposit accounts in various banks. They have no say over how much we decide to put in them, no matter the circumstance, and surely throw back the exact amount we need whenever we request it.The difference is that learners are independent individuals who will grow into adults in society in no distant time. Imagine a Nigeria where we are all recycling the biases, beliefs, and thought processes of our teachers because we internalized them as we were asked to, and evolved into adulthood with them. We need to educate and raise learners who know "to question everything, learn about everything, think about everything, and not be scared of divergent perspectives." To do this, our National curriculum needs to undergo a revamp to meet the educational needs of the dynamism that is the current world.Thank you, Virginia Cawagas, for the expertly curated lectures and learning resources, and thanks to the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Centre of Education for International Understanding (APCEIU) for such an unforgettable learning experience.#Youth #education #sustainabledevelopment #educator
